To Whom It May Concern...

Cara Italia,
You are just a distant dream for many, only a vacation spot for some, but for me, you are another home. I could never have imagined being able to say those words because for years, I was only able to dream of you. You were beautifully portrayed in film, television and books. Pictures of you lined the world and were presented as a distant myth, a place unreachable. The mere thought of touching you, breathing your salty sea and bread filled air, walking on your ancient streets, partly understanding your bewitching language, this was something unimaginable. Yet, here I am. Everyday when I step outside I’m greeted with the hustle and bustle of the every-day-lives of people living in your jaw dropping back drop.
Never in my wildest dreams. Never. I am here, in you, living like your people live. Imagine this, we met online! Amazing, this is the power of the internet. Do you remember?  I certainly do, the moment my life changed. I took a huge leap flying to you. The first couple of weeks were disorienting and confusing, everything so new. As we spent more time together, I began to understand why.
Italy, you have provided me with so many fulfilling and sustaining memories to last me a life time. I never want to stop making more with you. As I sit here thinking about you, 3 years after our first encounter, I’m still in shock that I’m here with you! Yes, you’re fickle and stubborn. Yes, you’re falling apart. You’re flawed, like any great beauty is. You’ve taught me to embrace my flaws, to embrace my weird self. You’re one of a kind and so am I.
You’ll always have a special place in my heart, Italy.
With love,
Lauren
