All my memories in the form of food

My boyfriend will tell you that every time to go out to eat somewhere and are enjoying our meal, I have the overwhelming urge to tell him about a meal I had one year ago, two years ago, three years ago. I generally have a really good memory, but when food is involved there's no denying I remember it all. Food (and the smell that accompanies food) is pretty damn powerful when it comes to conjuring up long and forgotten memories! Maybe this is why my relationship with food is a strong one. I can't exactly pinpoint when this interest, this obsession took over but I'd say sometime in my youth. I think my dad had something to do with it, introducing me to new and interesting flavours at the young age. I spent a good chunk of my childhood in Ottawa where the shawarma is king and every apartment building smells like fish and spices that our Filipino neighbours have created. Ottawa has a large concentration of Filipinos and they love to cook and they cook really good food. My aunt always asked me to "please try this at least 3 times, if the first time you don't like it, try it again, if you still are unsure, take one more bite and if one the 3rd bite you're still not liking it, you probably don't like it!" Which is a philosophy I've adopted into my day to day life. I will try most foods once. Do you have a strong food memory? I'd like to hear about it. Leave a comment with a story about a food or the smell of a particular food that takes you back to a time and a place that will never be recreated.
